Wesley K. Bilodeau, 76, passed away in Tucson, Arizona on 30 January 2025. He had been in declining health for several years.
He was born on 19 April 1948 in Haverhill, Massachusetts, the son of Arnold Wesley and Dorothy Frances (Kelly) Bilodeau. Wes grew up in Haverhill and Science, Model Rocketry and Scouts were his passions. He graduated from Haverhill High School in 1966. Attending the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in Cimmaron, New Mexico lit his interest in geology.
He attended The University of Arizona, attaining his B.S. in Geology in 1971, thereafter accepting a career position in the department as a Research Specialist that same year. He managed the Geology Department’s field and laboratory equipment to support undergraduate field camp training and graduate program field studies. He performed countless X-ray diffraction analyses to assist professors and students research projects and trained the students to use the rock saws and crushing equipment, and microscopes, prepare their own thin sections, ore microscopy and thin section photos, and to perform XRD analyses. He was especially interested in clay mineralogy and was proud of his contributions to research on buckyballs at the UA. He retired on September 17, 2005, with a joyful celebration attended by staff, students, his neighbors, and former students.
Wes was a curious life-long learner interested in all aspects of science, natural history, world history, and French culture and language. His home on Timrod was his garden retreat with numerous potted plants, vegetable and desert plant gardens, and a riot of California poppies in the spring. He enjoyed photography, target practicing with his black powder rifle, collecting minerals and books, and traveling to national parks. He enjoyed a special visit to France with his parents.
He was a kind, intelligent, humble, and gentle man who will be missed by his family and friends. He is survived by brother Alden and wife JoAnne, brother Kevin Bilodeau and niece Erin Bilodeau and nephews Sean Bilodeau, Brian Bilodeau, and five grandnieces. He was preceded by his parents, brother Gary Bilodeau, and sister-in-law Janice Bilodeau.
No service will be held. Donations in Wes’ name to the charity of your choice are appreciated.
