Thomas Michael Powell, beloved father, brother. son, uncle, and friend, died unexpectedly on Tuesday. March 11. 2025.
Tommy was born on April 12, 1981, in Palm Springs, California. Since childhood, Tommy was known for his quick wit and humor, as well as his kindness of heart. Though he was not educated formally, he was an avid reader and could hold long discussions about a plethora of topics. He also had an affinity for truculence and could begin an argument just for the sport of it, much to the annoyance of his sisters, in particular.
His greatest source of pride and joy in his life were his two children, Freyja and Killian. There was never a conversation after the birth of his children that did not include Tommy talking about how happy his children made him, how smart and sweet they were, and how the best thing that he had ever done was to become a dad. He wanted nothing more than to see them grow and thrive, and to find happiness and success in everything that they did.
The unfortunate tragedy of Tommy’s life is that early on, he became dependent on substances to cope with trauma and pain he had endured throughout his childhood and adolescence. This dependence led to his incarceration for periods of his life, in which he adapted to institutional living and had difficulty readjusting to normalcy. There were, however, long periods of time in which he was able to function and was happy. He lived on the East Coast for a time and found happiness in connecting with nature. He camped, fished, and hiked in the Adirondack Mountains. He spent time with his family and found friends with interests that helped him to see the world outside of a cell. Shortly after, he met Brandi Justice (Gonzales) the mother of his two children, and for a time it seemed as though he had outrun his addiction, and that he was going to have the simple family life that he had always sought. However, much as Tommy wanted to live, he could not beat his addiction, and his life ended senselessly and abruptly.
Tommy is survived by his parents, Christopher Powell (Henderson, NV) and Linda Powell (Herkimer, NY),, his two children, Freyja and Killian Powell, their mom Brandi Justice (Gonzales), his grandma Sarah Flaugher, his siblings, Sharon Powell, Galadriel Powell, Katrina Pena (Thomas), Danny Ramos, Robert Powell, Brian Powell, Sabrina Powell, and Andrew Powell, Roger Wick, one of his best friends and brother, many nieces and nephews, as well as close friends in many different states. He was predeceased by his brother Chris Powell.
In lieu of services, there will be a quiet remembrance. The family will honor and celebrate Tommy privately.
