Sheila R. Mann, 89, a former resident of Shaftsbury, passed away on November 5 in Denver, Colorado. Born on January 9, 1935, in Boston, MA, Sheila dedicated much of her life to her family, education, and community service. She began her teaching career in North Haven, Maine, a small island off the coast of Maine, where she taught all subjects at a school of just 50 students, working closely with her husband, David. She taught for many years at Mt. Anthony Union High School in Bennington, Vermont, focusing her passion for education on special education and mathematics.
Beyond her professional and community life, she was an active member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, which she shared with her son and daughter-in-law, creating lasting memories and a legacy of enthusiasm for historical reenactment. As a lover of animals, she raised several Newfoundland dogs and several cats and donated to many animal charities.
Sheila was a longtime member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Bennington, where she served as president, treasurer, and as representative to the Bennington Interfaith Council. She was a proud descendent of The Rev. Theodore Parker, a famous Unitarian minister and abolitionist. Sheila was also active in the American Association of University Women (AAUW) in Bennington, advocating for women's education and empowerment, as well as a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Bennington.
Sheila is survived by her daughter, Margaret Mann of Platteville, Colorado, her daughter-in-law, Robin CarrollMann of Morris Plains, New Jersey, and her lifelong friend, Priscilla Mueller of Schuylerville, New York. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, David L. Mann, her son, David Michael Mann, eight brothers and sisters, and her beloved Newfoundland dog and companion, Tucker.
A celebration of her life will be held on November 10 as part of the Sunday service at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Bennington, at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Second Chance Animal Shelter in Arlington, Vermont, honoring Sheila's love for animals, or a charity of one’s choice. Sheila's left behind a legacy of kindness, humor, education, and service to her family, her friends, and her community.
