Rick Van Wyhe was born on March 27, 1958, to Raymond and Carol (Burtch) Van Wyhe
in Luverne, MN. He was raised in the Ellsworth, MN, area attending church at the State
Line Presbyterian Church, grade school in Luverne, MN, and high school in Ellsworth,
MN. He graduated in 1976. After attending Augustana College for a short time he
moved to San Diego, CA, to warmer weather. While there he studied and taught early
Essene/Nazirene principles and practices, eventually receiving a Doctor of Divinity
degree from the Essene Foundation of California. This study and research led him to
co-author a book titled The Gospel of the Nazirenes in 1997. Rick moved around and
enjoyed flipping houses. He also held many retail sales jobs. While flipping houses,
Rick moved many places including Scottsdale, Phoenix, Cave Creek, Oregon, Austin,
TX eventually landing in the Cottonwood, AZ area. Rick was gifted in music and
enjoyed playing piano. He loved to go hiking on the trails around Sedona and taking the
occasional ride on his Harley. Being in such a beautiful part of God’s creation gave him
much peace. He was a friend to many all over the country but especially to his “Arizona
Family”.
He is survived by his sister, Judy Top Helmers and her husband Tim Helmers, of
Ashton, IA, niece Candi (Kris) Norgaard, nephew Kelly (Kaitlyn) Top, of Paullina, IA,
Step-mother Carol (Mulder) Van Wyhe, of Luverne, MN, step-brothers, Randy (Marcia)
Mulder, of Luverne, MN and Tony (Julie) Mulder, of Estherville, IA, step-sisters, Pamela
(Drew) Likness of Fargo, ND and Melissa (Mark) Ayers, of Estherville, IA, many other
nieces and nephews and by his friends, Joe and Darryl from his “Arizona Family”. He
was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Carol (Burtch) Van Wyhe, his
sister, Connie Van Wyhe and his brother-in-law, Bill Top.
A prayer service will be held at the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona, AZ, on a date
yet to be decided.
