The story of
Lt. Col. Richard Gene Humphreys, USAF (Retired) January 18, 1939 – March 3, 2025 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lt Col Richard Gene Humphreys, USAF (Retired), who was born to Margaret Tam Wong Humphreys and Gene Lewis Humphreys on January 18, 1939, in Wailuku, Maui, Hawai’i. He passed away peacefully in Phoenix, Arizona, on March 3, 2025. Richard was born and raised on the island of Maui. He attended Kaunoa English Standard School and Baldwin High School, where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, demonstrating his dedication and leadership from a young age. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Hawai’i and was commissioned into the United States Air Force through the AFROTC program. During his college years, Richard worked for HATS (Hawaiian Air Tours Service), further fueling his passion for aviation. Throughout his distinguished military career, Richard initially served as a KC-135 tanker pilot but went on to earn ratings in both fixed-wing and rotary aircraft. He proudly served as a rescue pilot in Vietnam, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to his country. His service was marked by a deep sense of duty embodying the highest ideals of military aviation and national defense. While stationed in Salina, Kansas, Richard met the love of his life, Georgeann Curtis. The two recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in January, marking a lifetime of love and devotion. Beyond his military service, Richard was a member of Aloha Shriners and Scottish Rite. He was a man of deep integrity, commitment, and kindness, always dedicated to his family and community. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Margaret Tam Wong Humphreys and father, Gene Lewis Humphreys. Richard is survived by his devoted wife, Georgeann Curtis Humphreys, who resides in their home; his daughter, Shelly Humphreys; his son, Stephen Humphreys and wife Amy; and his granddaughters, Carly Wallace and Lyann Humphreys. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Richard's memory to Shriners Children’s Hospital or Hospice of the Valley. Richard will return home and be laid to rest beneath the Koʻolau Mountains at Hawai'i State Veterans Cemetery. Richard's life was a testament to dedication, love, and service. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
