The story of
Nicholas Velch passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024, at the age of 78, with his nephew Jeff by his side. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Nick was the beloved son of Nick Velch and Johanna Velch. He is survived by his brother, William Velch, his sister-in-law, Patricia, and his nephews, Vincent Velch (wife Laura) and Jeffrey Velch. He was also a cherished uncle to his grand-nieces, Samantha Pauly (husband Jacob and their children Steven, Emma, and Sophia) and Nicole Velch (fiancé Zachary). Nick grew up in Hazel Park and Oak Park, Michigan, and graduated from Oak Park High. He went on to earn a degree in business and accounting from Lawrence Institute of Technology. His career began at an Oak Park accounting firm before moving to a large sign printing firm in Detroit. In the early 80s, Nick relocated to Sun Canyon, Scottsdale, where he opened a gourmet coffee, ice cream, and sandwich shop. After selling the shop, he joined a prominent law firm in Phoenix as their financial administrator, eventually transitioning to a home office role until his full retirement. Nick was a man of many passions and pursuits. He hiked Squaw Peak daily and completed the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim hike three times. He enjoyed the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auctions, hosting friends in his man cave with cigars and adult beverages, and traveling to destinations like Europe, Croatia, Paris, Prince Edward Island, Hawaii, and the mountains of Montana and Idaho for snowmobiling. Summers were spent at Vince and Laura's lake house in Alexandria, Minnesota, where he delighted in making campfires overlooking the lake. A lover of music, Nick attended many concerts at Pine Knob in Michigan, with favorites including Willie Nelson, John Denver, and Waylon Jennings. He was also an avid car enthusiast, owning four Corvettes over the years, with his last trip through the Colorado Rockies. His photographic memory was legendary; as a child, he could recite the addresses and zip codes of 125 family friends and identify cars by their hood ornaments or hubcaps. In the Sun Canyon community, Nick was a cherished figure. He served as the Sun Canyon president, bringing continuity and order, and was known for coordinating brunches and parties, greeting visitors in his man cave as a cigar aficionado, and being Costco's ideal customer. Nick was also the community landscaper and maintenance overseer, ran the grievance department, whispered to felines, and acted as the board spokesman. He executed contracts with precision and served the community without compensation. Nick's community spirit was evident in the Sun Canyon Sunday Brunches he hosted, cooking for over 80 people and fostering a sense of unity. Nick's generosity and love for family were unparalleled. During Christmas of 2023, he secured a beautiful home in Paradise Valley and brought in fourteen family members from California and Minnesota, covering all expenses, including flying Santa in for the kids. Nick's life was a testament to generosity, community, and the love of family. He was especially grateful for the caregivers at Central Scottsdale Assisted Living and Bliss Hospice during his final days, as well as others throughout his care. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. A celebration of life will be announced sometime towards the Fall. He is now reunited with his angels.
