Mary Jean (Kobus) Weahkee
(September 11, 1945 – May 18, 2024)
Mary Jean (Kobus) Weahkee passed away peacefully at home in Scottsdale, Arizona on the morning of May 18, 2024, in the company of her loving family. Mary is preceded in death by her husband of 33 years Jimmy Johnny Weahkee, her parents Horace William Kobus and Josephine (Burrough) Theisen of Burlington, Iowa, her brother James Lee Kobus of Corpus Christie, Texas, her brother William Horace Kobus of Burlington, Iowa, and stepson Jimmy Eugene Weahkee of Bloomfield, NM.
Mary is survived by her sister Judith Fenton of Burlington, Iowa. Her daughter Lori (Dowell) Grassberger, husband Bill, and grandchildren Jestin Dowell, Francesca Kaiser, Joie Fleeman and Willy Grassberger. Mary inherited a large family when she married Jim, which includes sons Michael (Rose) Weahkee of Scottsdale, AZ, Charley (Karen) Weahkee of Conroe, TX, and Timothy (Lisa) Weahkee of Kingman, AZ, as well as daughter Germaine Audrine Weahkee of Phoenix, AZ. At the time of her death, Mary had 24 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Mary worked and played side-by-side with her husband Jim their entire marriage. They both enjoyed to fish and play pool. They worked together on many home renovations and remodeling projects, and if you had the opportunity to work with them you quickly found yourself a part of their circle of friends and family. Mary enjoyed creating art through painting, drawing, and carving. Mary also loved nature and nurturing plants. She fed ‘her birds’ outside of her doorway every morning, so that they would come to sing for her on her porch while she drank her coffee.
Mary and Jim met in Las Vegas, Nevada and they were married there in 1988. They both loved to travel and they made many road trips all over the United States together. They were able to go on a couple of ocean line cruises in the Caribbean and in Mexico, they got to tour the White House, trap crabs in the Pacific Northwest, enjoy Disney World with several of their grandkids and meet lots of interesting people along the way.
Mary requested to be cremated and to have her remains spread at her and Jim’s favorite fishing hole back home in New Mexico. Her wishes will be carried out and more specific information will be shared with friends and family members as it becomes available.
