A life extraordinarily well-lived came to an end for George Bornhijm on May 12, 2024 in Boulder, Colorado. He was born on March 26, 1943 in Nederhorst den Berg, The Netherlands. During his lifetime career as a pilot and officer in the Royal Netherlands Navy he flew more than 11,000 hours on long-range maritime patrol missions around the world with NATO. Upon retirement in 1998, he and his family emigrated to the United States to Boulder, Colorado. He became an active volunteer in the Sugarloaf Fire Department, a wildland firefighter, and organizer of their annual fund raising garage sale.
The Dutch island of Curacao held a special place in George's heart. Over the past 15 years it became a 'second home' where a community of friendships, old and new, were rekindled and formed.
Known for his humor and spirited, out-going personality, he touched the lives of many. He will be forever missed by his wife, Sally, his son and daughter in law, Rob and Sonja, grandchildren Arjan, Anja and Maja, his sisters, Barbara and Johanna, and nieces and nephews in The Netherlands.
