The story of
Hans-Peter Ehrich, aged 82, passed away peacefully at the end of July 2024 in Twentynine Palms, California. He was born in Hamburg, Germany on June 19th, 1942, to Werner Peter John Ehrich and Thea Dora Adelherd Stahlbahm. Hans-Peter Ehrich lived in Hamburg until age 10 with his parents, Werner and Thea, brother Klaus Joe Ehrich and sister Brigitte Ehrich. From a young age, he was up to no good, stealing apples from WWII British soldiers with his brother Klaus. In 1952, when Hans-Peter was 10 years old, the Ehrich family immigrated to the United States. The whole family traveled on “The Italia” ship from Hamburg to Utah via Ellis Island. Sponsored by the Mormon Church, the family’s final destination was Salt Lake City where they settled. Upon arrival to the United States, Hans-Peter did not know any English but learned quickly by reading the English dictionary from front to back. As a young man, he was extremely intelligent with a high IQ and was even invited to join Mensa. In high school, he joined the school’s wrestling team and was loved by many, as indicated by his enthusiastic high school yearbook signatures. Soon after high school, he registered for the US Military but was honorably discharged for having flat feet. Early in his life, Hans-Peter moved to Los Angeles, California where he met his first wife Diane Webster in 1964. They were married on December 2nd, 1966, and had their only child, Collette Diane Ehrich on September 1st, 1967. Hans-Peter was a man of many talents, and he loved to work with his hands. In his 20’s he worked at a gas station in Palms, Los Angeles where he learned to be a mechanic. He was then a mechanic at Byron Woodley’s, Santa Monica until 1977. Soon after, he worked for IBM conducting business machine repair. Around 1983, he started working at the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles and quickly worked his way up to being the Director of Engineering. Around 1985, he moved to Naples Florida for a position as the Director of Engineering at the Registry Resort Hotel. His time in Florida was short. In 1989 he was offered a job as the Director of Engineering at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles. Around this time, he married his second wife Tina Marie Ridings, and they had their only child, Andrew Chase Ehrich who was born on June 24th, 1991. Hans-Peter worked at the Beverly Hills Hotel until he retired in 1996. After he retired, Hans-Peter lived in Big Bear, California where he volunteered as a set designer at the local “Katz Theater.” In Big Bear he was visited often by his son, daughter and granddaughter. From 2008 to his death, Hans-Peter lived in Twentynine Palms, California. During this time, he had three dogs Rex, Dave and Hans. Until the end of his life, Hans-Peter was extremely active mentally and physically. He kept his mind sharp by playing games, baking bread, and reading. He kept his body active by walking more than 100,000 steps per week. Hans-Peter is preceded in death by his father, Werner, his mother, Thea Dora, and his brother, Klaus Joe. He is survived by his stepmother Trudy, his sister Brigitte, and brother Thomas as well as both his children, Collette and Andrew. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews Cory, Caitin and Annika. He was a proud grandfather to Sofia Collette Ehrich, Aeris Caitlyn Ehrich, Ava Marie Ehrich, Andrew Chase Ehrich II, and Asher Hayes Ehrich. We will always remember Hans-Peter as a clever and witty character. He had a big laugh which always came with a unique sense of humor. His spirit will forever be remembered by the sweet smell of his pipe tobacco, the crunch of Fritos Scoops, and the endless trails of footprints he paved through the desert which our family will walk for years to come.
