Guillermo “Bill” González-White, age 87, passed away July 17 in Olympia, Washington, after a long illness.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gabriele; three daughters: Miriam, Sonja (now Sr. Teresa) and Maria, and granddaughter, Sofia; siblings Maruja, Margarita, Gabriela, Bernardo, Lucia, and Humberto. He was preceded in death by his brother Roberto.
He was a native of Colombia, South America, born in 1937 to Dr. Bernardo González Villa and Maria White Ruiz. He came to the United States in the 1950s to study at St John’s University, New York, after which he was inducted into military service. After a distinguished military career including two tours of duty in Vietnam, and peacetime exercises all over the world, he retired as a Command Sergeant Major in 1989. His military decorations include the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, three Bronze Star Medals, three Meritorious Service Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, and the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal.
He went on to have a successful second career restoring classic Mercedes Benz cars, applying his extensive knowledge of mechanical engineering and love for the brand. His attention to detail was well-known in the local auto community. He was a military history buff, National Geographic fan, and loved dogs.
His life was an example of patriotism, duty, grit, and service. An inurnment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
