The story of
Frank Stirling Gemmell II, age 84, passed away peacefully with his daughter by his side on July 16, 2024. Longtime resident of Scottsdale, Arizona, he was born on October 16, 1939 in Bakersfield, CA to Frank and Althea Gemmell. Frank loved life, his small circle of family and his large circle of friends. He was known to invite neighbors over for an evening glass of wine. He loved socializing with people from all walks of life. He was a radio operator on the USS Spinax Submarine at age 17. His technical experiences led him to an electrical engineering degree from San Diego State. It was during this time he met his loving wife of 50 years, Janice Dee (Waidley) Gemmell. He was hired by Motorola in Scottsdale in 1967. They loved living in Scottsdale, Arizona and never left. He was a dedicated father. After a successful career, he retired from Motorola in 1998. He became very involved in the Arizona Model A Club. Not only did he restore Model A’s, he and Janice toured extensively in their 1930 Model A Town Sedan through 8 countries and over 30 states with Model A friends. He is survived by his loving daughter, Kristen, her husband Russ, grandson, Caleb, sister, Ethel, and nieces, nephews and cousins. Frank will be greatly missed by all those that have been blessed by knowing him. A Celebration of Life will be held in the fall. Contributions can be made in Frank’s name to support future generations’ interests in science and engineering: Arizona Science Teachers Association, Flandrau Science Center, 1601 E. University Blvd., PO Box 210091, Tucson, AZ 85721-0091.
