The story of
Debra Deloris Mullen, affectionately known as “Debbie” passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 07, 2024, surrounded by love. Born on July 22, 1960, in Portland, Oregon, Debbie was the youngest child of Thomas D and Mattie Ruth Mullen, completing their family of five children. She cherished her role as the "baby" of the group. Debbie began her educational path at Irving and Sabon elementary schools later attending Atkinson Elementary as part of Portland Public School’s Integration Busing Initiative. During this initiative many minority students experienced the harsh realities of racism often being bullied and harassed. Though Debbie was a mild-mannered, soft-spoken kid, she spoke up against mistreatment. Her classmate, Kevin Berry fondly remembers Debbie for standing up to a racist bully on his behalf, an act that sparked a lifelong friendship between them. Her courage and compassion left a lasting impression on Kevin, cementing their bond from that moment onward. After graduating from Monroe High School in 1978, Debbie pursued higher education at two historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs): Grambling State University, where she earned a degree in Biology, and Howard University, as a part of the Masters Program where she attained a Physician’s Assistant degree. In 1988, Debbie married Clark Price, a military man, leading to travels across various states due to his assignments. Though their marriage later ended in divorce, it brought them their pride and joy through the birth of their son, Michael Price, born on February 5, 1990. Debbie adored Michael and also doted on her beloved chihuahua, Princess, whose antics and companionship brought her immense joy. Debbie often shared many stories and pictures on Facebook of Princess, the little chihuahua that stole her heart. Debbie was a passionate basketball enthusiast and a diehard Seattle Seahawks fan. Much like her mother she LOVED to shop. She enjoyed reading and attending plays. Her true love was music. She attended many music concerts and music festivals. Her favorite get up and go song was “Hot in Herre” by Nelly. On a memorable road trip from Seattle to Tacoma with Michael, she played it on repeat, much to his chagrin, but a memory he cherishes dearly. Through life's challenges, Debbie maintained a resilient spirit and infectious smile, embracing every moment with integrity and a determination to "complete the mission." Debbie is survived by her loving son, Michael Price, her brother, Thomas D Mullen Jr., and sister, Kathryn Rená Mullen-Hepburn, along with cherished nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of family and friends who adored her. She is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Mattie Mullen, her brother, Toby L. Mullen, her sister, Princella Smith, and her beloved Princess. Debbie's legacy of love, courage, and zest for life will forever be cherished by all who knew her.
