Constance "Connie" Smith Peate Huyck, 90, passed away from complications after a fall at her home in Westminster, Colorado. Connie spent most of her life helping others. She was known for being a compassionate listener, patient and caring, and dearly loved. She will be missed very much.
Connie was born at the Presidio of San Francisco to Col. Donald H. and Eleanor Smith. As a child in a noted military family, she lived through some of the last century's most significant events. She lived on the island of Corregidor in the Philippines, Fort Monroe in Virginia, and Guam, attended the first year of the Frankfort American High School in 1946 and graduated from East High School, Denver, in 1951. Connie attended Colorado State University and completed graduate work at the University of Colorado.
In 1954, Connie married Russell Peate and they had two children. They divorced in 1977.
Connie worked as a teacher and school counselor for Erie Elementary and the St. Vrain Valley School District, and for the Boulder County Safehouse as a children's counselor. She volunteered for Boulder and Jefferson County Open Space, Boulder Peer Counselors, the American Red Cross, Greenwood Wildlife Sanctuary and Exempla Good Samaritan hospital. She was among the first Red Cross volunteer responders to fly into New York City following the events of 9/11.
Connie married Adrian Huyck in 1993 and they moved to Westminster, Colorado. Adrian passed away in 2011.
Connie loved the mountains and the ocean, and she asked that her ashes be scattered there. Her family is planning a memorial gathering for friends and family in the spring.
Connie is survived by a large and loving family, including her son Bill Peate, her daughter Nancy (Robert Sleator) Peate, two grandsons, Declan Sleator and Brent Peate, step-daughters Stephanie (Jim) Smith, Sue (Doug, deceased in 2013) Clayville, Dr. Aimee (Adam Myers) Huyck, Elizabeth (Scott) Groginski, stepsons Bob (Diane) Huyck and John Huyck, 17 step-grandchildren, and 24 step-greatgrandchildren.
