It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Tiffin D. DeWitt, who died on October 15 2023 at the age of 91. She will be remembered as a hard-working mother, grandmother, friend, and an incredible soul who touched the lives of many.
Tiffin was born on July 20 1932 to Jess Tiffin Iler and Minnie Ella Iler in Modesto California. She spent her early years in Lakeview, where her father owned and operated a storefront business “The News and Sweets”; and her adolescence near John Day Oregon, on a ranch on Canyon Creek where she developed a love for animal husbandry and botany. One of her youthful hobbies was saving injured wild animals including chipmunks, squirrels, birds and a pet deer. She also spent time riding horseback in the mountains.
In her early work life she was a dedicated elementary school teacher in Bend Oregon, and taught ESL in Arizona and Mexico. In addition to her teaching, she owned and operated a series of farms and ranches, including locations near Ocean Lake, Lakeview, Redmond, and Starkey, all in Oregon.
Tiffin loved to travel and made many international trips including to locations in Europe, Africa, and South America; and was drawn in particular to the mountainous regions. She lived in Paraguay for 10 years in her seventies while developing a macadamia nut orchard, where she employed several locals, taught some of them english and funded their college.
She was not only accomplished in her career but also devoted to her family. She is survived by her children David E. Asher, Andrea L. Bollman, Jessie L. Warren, Jacqueline J. Elliott; and by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her extended family, friends, and those who felt the privilege of knowing her. She was predeceased by her son, Richard R. Oldham, in 1979 at the age of 22; and by her husbands.
In her later years, china painting brought her immense joy and she produced lovely pieces, many of them animal-themed. She became skilled at accurate painting renditions of many species of birds in natural feeding and foraging postures. She worked from her studio in her home on River Forest Court in Oak Grove, a suburb of Portland Oregon, where she enjoyed the mature Douglas Fir trees that dominated the lot’s landscape. She could often be found in the garden as she enjoyed landscape gardening there, and everywhere she lived, by planting flowers, shrubs and trees. Her zest for life and health brightened the lives of those around her. She possessed a lifelong curiosity, was always active, and immersed herself in her endeavors with commitment and enthusiasm.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the outpouring of love, support, and condolences during this difficult time.
Tiffin D. DeWitt leaves behind a legacy of consistent work and strength. She will live on in our hearts and memories, and her spirit will continue to inspire us.
