Therin “Bruce” Keeling, age 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Phoenix, Arizona on December 17, 2023. Bruce was born in Louisville, Kentucky on December 26, 1937, to Therin Jack Keeling and Dorothy (Bridwell) Keeling. He graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1955.
After high school, he enlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. He was assigned to the medical/dental corps where he learned chairside dental assisting and lab skills. Always adventurous, he signed up to ride rocket sleds to test the effects of gravitational forces on the human body.
Bruce married Sheila (Peggy) Andre in 1958 and had three children, Lynn, Bobby and Lori, while living in Alamogordo. As a growing family, they enjoyed camping and watching the Dallas Cowboys. Once out of the military, he started his own dental lab in the garage of the family home.
The family moved to Mesa, Arizona in 1971 when Bruce was offered a job at Codesco Dental Laboratory. Several years later, he became the proud owner of Progressive Prosthetics in Scottsdale, Arizona. In 1985, Bruce and Peggy divorced and in 1988 he married Juliet. In 2003, he sold his lab to Dental Services Group and continued as a consultant and trainer until December 2020. Not ready to retire even at age 83, he joined Wiand Dental Lab where he worked as a technical trainer until May of 2023. Throughout his career, Bruce spent many hours at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health in Mesa, training dental students in all aspects of providing oral appliances to patients. Bruce’s technical expertise was highly respected within the dental and dental laboratory community.
Bruce had many hobbies throughout his life. He obtained his private pilot’s license and purchased a Cessna with his neighbor Bill Cook. He enjoyed fly-fishing, entering and winning shooting matches, reloading his own ammunition, slot car racing, and even tried his hand at sewing to prove he could do it. He loved the outdoors and was a big fan of camping trips. When he was 75 he rode his Harley with friends from Phoenix to Sturgis and back with a few detours along the way.
With all he accomplished, Bruce would want people to know the most important thing in his life was his faith in Jesus. In 1998, he realized he was spiritually dead and needed the forgiveness of God for reconciliation and life through the sacrifice Jesus made in His death and resurrection. Bruce began a journey of trusting God and seeking to follow Him. His life was transformed and his faith helped him in his battle with cancer as he trusted God’s plan for his life.
Bruce is survived by his wife, Juliet, his daughters Lynn (Scott) Nauman, Lori (Doug) Orr, stepdaughters Cheryl Franklin, Debbie (Bill) Harrison, Laura (Joey) Curlin, and Marylou de la Torre, grandchildren, Brandon (Julie) Keeling, Brenna (Allen) Nichols, Trevor (Rachel) Keeling, Mitchell (Kaila) Orsucci, Jonathan Pierce, Sterling Franklin, Reba, David, Josh, Shayla, Sharaya and Kate Harstick, and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his brother Bill Keeling, his son, Robert Keeling, and stepson Warren Pierce.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Desert View Bible Church, 105 W. Carefree Hwy, Phoenix, Arizona, on January 27, 2024 at 1:00pm. Everyone who knew him or any of his family is invited. A reception will follow the service at the church.
