The story of
Stephen Denise McAfee, "Mac", was born to Evelyn Harrett (Miller) McAfee and Elmer Leon McAfee on March 27, 1948. He was born in Washington County, Maryland, the sixth of 7 children born to Evelyn and Leon. He died on June 20, 2024 at the age of 76, a resident of Hemet, California. He was a 1966 graduate of South Hagerstown High School. Soon after, he joined the army where he met Patricia Ann Kendrick, of Canal Folton, Ohio. He married Patricia (Trish) whom he called the love of his life, on February 6, 1971. The two went on to have 4 children together, Melissa (Missy), Stephen (Jamie), Stephen (Chad), and Benjamin (Ben). The early years of marriage and raising their family took place in Maugansville, MD, the first home they purchased together. They moved the family to Hemet, California in 1986, but Maryland, particularly the mountains, never left Stephen’s heart and he spoke often of returning. He was still a Hemet resident at the time of his death. Stephen and Patricia were divorced, but maintained a friendship for the sake of their children and were able to say goodbye before his passing. In 1975 Stephen and Patricia were baptized as Jehovah’s Witnesses. His worship of Jehovah remained an integral part of his life all the way until the end. His true belief was that death was just a long sleep while he awaited being awakened in the paradise, on earth, where he would be reunited with those who preceded him in death. Stephen was known for his love of his trade. He was often sought after by other companies who had no desire to compete with his skill level. At one time, he was in construction, but moved on to the glazing industry for approximately 40 years. He never tired of pointing out the many projects around the “desert area” that he had completed; he leaves behind quite a legacy in that region. He took immense pride in a job well done and passed on a love for the trades to his children, with his sons both continuing in the glazing industry. In December of 2006, Stephen suffered a massive stroke that left him with many deficits. It was the inability to do the job he loved that caused him the most pain after the stroke. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Evelyn; a son, Stephen James (Jamie); granddaughter, Megan Armond; brothers Wayne (Jack) McAfee and Thomas (Tom or Doll) McAfee; sisters, Patty McAfee, Judy (Peg) Palmer, Susan (Sue or Crick) Brechbill, and Eunice (Elaine) Ashkettle. He leaves behind his 3 children, Melissa Lynn (McAfee) Bowman, Stephen Chad McAfee, Benjamin Cory McAfee; a half-sister, Kimberly Socks of Hagerstown Maryland; his grandchildren, Tylin, Tate, Elliot, Aspan, Kayla, Sklyer, Hailee, Josheph, 6 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on July 13th, 2024 at 1:00 p.m., immediately followed by a Celebration of Life, for any who wish to stay. Both will be held at Coronado Gardens Clubhouse located at 81736 Ave 48 Indio, CA 92201. (Please use google maps for location.) A zoom meeting for those wishing to view the memorial service from afar will be available. Zoom id: 712-260-6774 passcode: 6774.
