The story of
Sharon J. Hastings Mason passed away peacefully on August 12th, 2024 in Parker, CO. She was born on a hot summer day in Arcadia, NE on June 15th, 1936 to George E. Hastings and Irene I. Zikmund Hastings. First and foremost, Sharon was a proud mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and lifelong friend to many. She loved her maternal Czech heritage, was a lifelong Cornhusker and Christian Scientist. Her hobbies included music, art, fashion/cosmetics and interior design. She was an accomplished singer/soloist, taking vocal lessons from a Juilliard-educated vocal teacher, singing many solos in church, and for funerals and weddings when she was younger. Attending grade school and high school in Ord, she walked home to have lunch with her mother each day. As a girl, Sharon was the lead in all the high school musicals, twirled the baton as the majorette in the band and loved being involved in Jobs’ Daughters. After high school she attended the University of NE, Lincoln for two years, living in the Chi Omega sorority house. After college she married her high school sweetheart Hal D Mason, in Ord, and began their married life with Hal’s Army service in Texas, and finally in Vacaville, CA., then returning to the Ord family farm, where Sharon became the loving mother of two boys, Mitch and Randy, and a girl, Michelle. The family moved to Grand Island, Nebraska in 1967 where Sharon and a high school friend opened a small hobby shop and pioneered a televised craft show. In 1972 the family moved to McCook, NE, where she helped her husband open the family insurance business. Here, Sharon was actively involved in Brownies, 4-H, PEO and president of the McCook Community Concert Association. She also worked as a part-time dental assistant, and had an antique business on the 2nd floor of their insurance building for many years. Because of her lifelong love of California, starting to travel there with her parents on the train when she was a girl, she made the brave move to Corona, CA in 2001, and was happy there for many years. Then in 2015, deciding she wanted to be closer to family, she moved to Parker, CO. Continuing her loving legacy, are sons: Mitch of Schaumburg, IL., Randy of Parker, Co., and daughter, Michelle (Kent) Johnson of Lenexa, KS.; brother, Al (Marj) Hastings of Wellfleet, NE.; grandchildren, Mason (Hannah) Johnson and Mackenzie (Alex) Wreath, both of Lenexa, KS., and two great-grandchildren, Theodore and Penelope Wreath; along with cherished nephews and life-long friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Irene Hastings, both of Nebraska, and daughter in-law, Barbara Mason, of Parker, CO. Private family service to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to/in care of: Mitch Mason, 200 Hawk Court, Schaumburg, IL. 60193, and will be designated to the Ord High School Choir program.
