The story of
Peter Willoughby Rowe passed away on October 9, 2024, at the age of 72, from heart and peripheral vascular disease. He was born on March 9, 1952, in Boulder, Colorado to John (Jack) Westel Rowe and Mary (Marieli) Dorothy Theresa Lowenstein Rowe. The family moved soon after to Zurich, Switzerland where his father completed his doctoral studies. At the age of four, they moved to Madison, WI where Peter lived until graduation from Madison West High School (1970) and the University of Wisconsin (B.A., Art Education, 1974), specializing in jewelry making and metal smithing. After one year teaching in Benton Harbor, MI, he moved to Detroit for further studies in jewelry making and worked at Deroy’s Jewelry. He studied with the Gemological Institute of America and was a graduate gemologist. He earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia in 1989, then returned to Deroy’s in Detroit. In 1997, he moved to Seattle, WA, where he worked for Sholdt Jewelers until retirement. Throughout his professional life, he operated a custom jewelry business in his own sophisticated home shop. He also taught classes at the University of Washington School of Art and hosted an online jewelry networking group, mentoring many jewelry students. Growing up, Peter was active in the outdoors and obtained his Eagle Scout at age 15. He backpacked in the Sierra Nevada with his family, Isle Royale with his scout troop, and Glacier Park with his brother, Bill. He enjoyed skiing and canoeing. However, at age 16 he was struck with juvenile onset diabetes limiting his activities progressively over the years. He bore this unjust burden with grace and purpose to live his life to the best of his ability. With family, they enjoyed canoe and rafting trips in British Columbia and Alaska, and genealogy trips to Europe. He loved international travel and, in his later life, took frequent trips to destinations ranging from Thailand to Egypt. He especially enjoyed cruises and other trips with his mother, after she was widowed. Peter was a gentle, generous and friendly man who never missed an opportunity to make a joke or silly pun. He tried to always be informed and think openly about the events of the world around him. He loved visitors, and his home in Seattle always had an open door. He helped and supported his neighbors; he loved and was loved by many, with whom he was known as someone who would willingly share what he had with those in need. He was devoted to cats and owned many during his life, as well as regularly feeding the strays in his neighborhood. Of necessity, Peter was expert at managing his diabetes. He became an early adopter of every new technique, including the original Glucometer, then later insulin pumps and continuous blood glucose monitoring. In his last 20 years of life, he followed a rigorous vegan diet. He maintained a positive attitude toward life despite becoming progressively limited by multiple diabetic complications, and was happy and optimistic right until the end. Peter never married and had no children. Peter was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his two brothers, Bill and Mike, and by eight nieces and nephews (Matt Ferguson, Star Delcoure, Nick and Kobe Rowe, Michelle Kopplow, Kyle Rowe, Jeff and Michael Schwar, and numerous grand nieces and nephews. He left his example of a positive attitude in the face of adversity, and a legacy of his unique art and jewelry to his family and friends. He will be interred next to his parents in Madison, WI. We are thankful for the gift of Peter’s spirit in our lives.
