The story of
Kirke Long, a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Portland, Oregon, on October 17, 2024. His journey was marked by courage and grace, particularly during his long battle with cancer. Despite the challenges he faced, Kirke remained a beacon of kindness and support for those around him. As a devoted father, Kirke poured his heart into raising his son, Killian, always offering words of encouragement and love. His laughter and warmth filled their home, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime. As a husband, he was a steadfast partner to his wife, Sonya Lovett, whom he married in 1997 in Anchorage, Alaska. She felt his unwavering support through every challenge they faced together. Kirke's friendships were a testament to his generous spirit. He had a unique ability to make everyone feel valued and heard, offering help to anyone in need without hesitation. His kindness and empathy touched countless lives, and his absence will leave a profound void in our hearts. Though he has left this world, Kirke’s legacy of love and compassion will live on in the stories we share and the lives he influenced. Let us remember him not only for his struggles but for the beautiful moments, the laughter, and the unwavering love he gave so freely. Kirke was preceded in death by his parents, Merritt Crayton Long and Phyllis Long Keyport, as well as his beloved oldest sister, Diana Long. He is survived by his siblings: Jim Melstrom of Maple Grove, Minnesota; Laurie (Larry) Thomas of Grace, Idaho; Jo (Mike) Weller; and Grace Long (Mike Corbin) of Palmer, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins who mourn his passing. In the words of those who knew and loved him, after the loss of a loved one, it’s hard to express the impact they had on our lives. If you are fortunate to have your loved ones around, cherish your time with them. Life is precious, and taking it for granted is not a regret that anyone should be left with. Rest in peace, Kirke. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. In his memory, donations may be made to Valley Community for Recycling Solutions, the National ALS Association, the Prostate Cancer Research Institute, or the Blood Bank of Alaska.
