Brian Sheldon Leolani Naluaʻi, 69, affectionately known to many as “Brian Da Hawaiian” peacefully passed away on December 5, 2023, while in the loving tender care of Hopewell House, a hospice facility in Portland, Oregon, following a long struggle with health issues.
Brian lived bigger than life and will be dearly missed. In his youth he performed with Nā Makahinu, Tavana’s Polynesian Spectacular, as well as with other popular entertainers in Hawaiʻi. He enjoyed “kanikapila” with whomever, whenever and wherever he could. He especially loved his time in California.
Brian served two years as a missionary for the LDS church in Northern France, where he learned to speak French. He started his law enforcement career as a reserve officer with the Honolulu Police Department. He was subsequently hired by and faithfully served his country for 22 years as a federal law enforcement officer, first with the Department of Justice - Immigration & Naturalization Service. Then, following an Executive Branch reorganization in 2001, he spent the remainder of his career with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, again as a Border Patrol Agent. He retired in October 2010, following a double cerebral embolism in July 2010, while on vacation in Washington. He resided primarily in Oregon, since that time.
Brian is survived by daughters Lilia and Kayla; granddaughter Isla; siblings Hansel, Solomon, Arnold, Calvin, Lucia, Brent and Duane; as well as three generations of 190 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the LDS Church, Waikalua Chapel, 45-150 Waikalua Rd., Kāneʻohe, HI 96744, Island of Oahu, on Friday February 23, 2024. Visitation 1030am; Program 1100am; Burial 100pm at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery, 45-425 Kamehameha Hwy, Kāneʻohe, HI 96744.
