The story of
Nathaniel Wander passed away on March 27, 2024, after a brief illness. He was born June 26, 1948, in Queens, New York, son of Fred and Ruth Wander. He is survived by beloved brother and sister-in-law Lawrence and Christine Wander, beloved uncle to Jennifer Himmelhoch and Nicole Hernandez and great uncle to Gavin, Gabriel and Riley Hernandez. He is referred to with love by his nieces as Uncle Nut. Nathniel graduated from Stuyvesant High School, Columbia College and Columbia University with two master’s degrees and a PhD, as well as a degree in Counseling/Psychology at Portland State. He served as an Associate Researcher in Anthropology at the University of California at San Fransisco, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Edinboro and Research Ornithologist at Observatorio Cayo Pajaro Chico in Belize. He also gave back to his community as a consultant/researcher/writer for his own company, Consultation for Change. Nathaniel was an avid marathon runner and hiker. He had infinite affection for dogs as well as a love for birding. Later in life Nathaniel became an accomplished artist and painter, painting hundreds of tiles, stones and paintings of birds. He traveled, studied, and lived all over the world including India, Peru, Israel, France and Belize. Nathaniel settled in Portland, Oregon, a place he loved, where he discovered his artistic ability, peace and good friends.
