The story of
Elizabeth Louise Vardaman (90) passed into Heaven, peacefully, on March 17, 2024, in Chandler, AZ. She was reunited with her husband, Charles Vardaman, her parents, Louis and Rosalee Stephens, her sister, Joyce Nordenberg, passing only 4 days prior, her son-in-law, Kevin Hansen, twin great-granddaughters, Piper and Paisley, as well as many other family and friends. Elizabeth, known as Betty to all, was born in Blythe, CA, on June 24, 1933. She was 2nd born and sister to Joyce, Murel, and Larry. She grew up in Buckeye, AZ, where she was involved in much. She had a beautiful voice, sang in Buckeye High School choir, ASU choir, for local big bands, and often for her family, accompanied by Chuck playing the piano. In high school, she was in several plays, was a majorette, and senior year, was voted most popular girl. Betty met Chuck while he was on a visit to Buckeye while helping out at his family’s cold food locker. He saw this beauty as she was picking up her family’s food. They began dating at that time. Shortly after, he left to serve in the Korean War. Upon his return, they married a few days later in Buckeye, October 26, 1952, and began their life in Phoenix, AZ. As a homemaker, Betty excelled. Not only was she the best mom anyone could hope for, she was the greatest cook and no one could balance a better budget. She was the first coupon warrior. Her skills allowed for the greatest meals with the best ingredients for the best price. She scoured everywhere for coupons, knew the best prices, and where to get them. She loved to cook and was amazing at it, entrees, breads, desserts, everything. On holidays, she filled the dining room table with her baking and candies. One of her true gifts was her love for all; she had the biggest heart. She not only cared for her own children but often cared for others to add to the family income. Later in life, her love for kids earned her the name of the Candy Lady. She bought a variety of candies for all the kids in her neighborhood. Someone was always at her door, including their Mamas and Grandmas. Even when speaking different languages, she knew the universal language of love. The love was returned as Betty received beautiful gifts from these kids and their families. She did this for 20 years. Betty’s greatest gift was being a mom to her surviving children, Paula (Phil)Newland, Karen (Jim)Sullivan, Ginger Hansen and Chuck (Carrie)Vardaman. She was Grandma to her surviving 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Betty touched each of our lives and we are all so blessed. She was an example and a light. Betty's Celebration of Life service is April 26th, 2024, at noon, being held at Valley of the Sun Mortuary & Cemetery, 10940 E Chandler Heights Rd, Chandler, AZ 85248. There will be a light lunch immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Dementiasociety.org
